The Damaging Effects of Bad Ergonomics on Health and Productivity

Many of us spend a large amount of our time working at desks, using computers, and participating in other sedentary activities in our fast-paced, modern world. Unfortunately, bad ergonomics can have a severe impact on our productivity and health because of the way we design our workstations and the routines we follow. According to a Body Discomfort survey conducted by Mesh from various companies with a total of 1,149 subjects, about 56.7% workers said they had experienced pain or discomfort due to poor ergonomics while working. It is crucial to recognise and take care of these ergonomic problems since they might negatively affect our physical and mental health.

What is Ergonomics?

Ergonomics is the science of designing workspaces, equipment, and tasks to fit the needs and capabilities of the worker. The goal of ergonomics is to create a comfortable, efficient, and safe environment that minimizes the risk of injury and discomfort. When ergonomics are neglected, it can lead to a range of problems.

Physical Effects

Musculoskeletal illnesses: Back pain, neck discomfort, and repetitive strain injuries are examples of musculoskeletal illnesses that can be exacerbated by poor ergonomics. These disorders are frequently brought on by improper body alignments, overuse of force, and repetitive motions.

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome: Carpal tunnel syndrome is a painful ailment caused by pressure on the median nerve in the wrist that can be brought on by excessive keyboard and mouse use combined with incorrect wrist alignment.

Problems with vision and eyestrain: Poor lighting, glare on computer screens, and incorrect placement of monitors can all contribute to eyestrain, which can result in discomfort and possibly more severe visual problems.

Fatigue and Discomfort: During extended work hours, uncomfortable seats, insufficient back support, and abnormal body positions can cause weariness and discomfort. Thus, productivity and job satisfaction are impacted.

Psychological Effects

Decreased Concentration and Focus: Poor ergonomics can induce discomfort and pain, which can impair focus and concentration. When your body aches or you're continuously altering positions, it's hard to focus on a task.elevated rates of turnover.

Increased Stress and Anxiety: Poor ergonomics can cause physical discomfort and a lack of focus, which can lead to increased stress and anxiety. Chronic stress can have a negative impact on mental health over time.

Productivity and Economic Effects

Decreased Efficiency: Employees are less efficient in their jobs when they are experiencing discomfort or agony. Bad ergonomics can lead to more breaks, diversions, and decreased productivity.

Increased Absenteeism: Chronic pain and discomfort can cause employees to take more sick days, lowering overall productivity and raising the financial strain on businesses.

Preventing the Damaging Effects of Bad Ergonomics
To mitigate the adverse effects of bad ergonomics, it's essential to implement the following strategies:

Ergonomic Assessment: It is recommended to perform periodic evaluations of workstations to determine their ergonomic suitability. Subsequently, appropriate modifications should be made, such as enhancing chair design, optimising monitor location, and adjusting keyboard arrangement.

Workplace Design: It is recommended to allocate resources towards the acquisition of ergonomic workplace furniture, lighting, and equipment that promote optimal posture and enhance overall comfort.

Promote Physical Activity: Foster a workplace culture that motivates employees to engage in regular standing, stretching, and movement activities, thereby mitigating the potential negative effects of extended sedentary behaviour.

Employee Training: The objective of this training programme is to provide employees with knowledge and understanding of appropriate ergonomics practises, as well as to promote the adoption of healthy habits such as taking regular breaks, engaging in stretching exercises, and maintaining optimal posture during their work hours.
